SubjectPilot Candidate
Title review One of the best unfinished animes every partially made

Title: Pilot Candidate

Released: Nov. 6, 2001

S/D: Dubbed

Genre: Action, Mech

# of episodes: 12

Run time: aprox 30 mins.

Story: In the far distant future every planet has been destroyed by the Victim, aliens from an unknown location in deep space, except one. The last bastion of humanity, Zion is under constant threat of annihilation from the Victim, their only hope is the Goddess, Giant mechs piloted by people with a special ability EX. Pilot Candidate follows the latest group of trainees for Goddess, focusing mainly on 2 candidates who stand out from the crowd in ability candidate #88 Zero Ena and his rival # 87 Hiead Gner

Bottom line: Excellent series. The only problem is it was not finished. The series ends abruptly, leaving you with a lot of questions. Some of which are answered in the OVA. Even with out an ending Pilot Candidate is worth seeing

Other available series: 1 OVA (has not been licensed so you can only get it by downloading it)

Title: Birdy the Mighty

Released: 1996

S/D: Dubbed

Genre: Action, Science-Fiction

# of episodes: 4 (on DVD 2 on videos)

Run time: approximately 2 hours total

Story: Meet Birdy and Tsutomu, An intergalactic police officer with super-human strength and a regular somewhat unlucky highschool student with only one thing in common. Walking home from cram school one night Tsutomu becomes a human shield for the interstellar outlaw Birdy is pursuing, leading to Tsutomu's death. Wait the main character just died in the first five minutes. But he's in luck, in accordance with interglactic law Birdy must merge with Tsutomu to sustain his life. Now with these two very different people sharing one body, entrance exams, a girlfriend who might have seen them switch places, a family who is trying to figure out why Tsutomu is acting so weird, a space criminal to catch before he turns Tokyo into a hive of hideous psychic soldiers and time running out can these two polar opposites learn to live together? Maybe he wasn't so lucky after all.

Bottom line: This anime is a new take on the old story "Jekyll and hide" told in a funny and quirky way. This little known anime is hard not to like, it's somewhat silly in parts but has enough action to make most fans happy. It's worth tracking a copy down. My only complaint is they didn't continue the story but it is still worth seeing.

Title: Shadow Skill pt.1 (the movie), pt.2 (the epilogue) Kagewaza
Released: 06-1997, 10-1997
S/D: dubbed
Genre: martial arts, action, fantasy
# Of episodes: N/A
Run time: pt.1 1hour 20mins, pt.2 52mins
Story: Shadow skill is about Elle Ragu, the 59th sevalle, the winner of the tournament, and her adopted brother Gau Ban. An orphan Elle took in after bandits murdered his parents. We follow their journey to visit the graves of Gau’s parents and to train for the tournament. Along the way they run into Vy Low (aka scarface) another sevalle, and the best fighter in the land. He follows them, watching Gau, to see if he’ll be the worthy rival he’s been looking for. There are many impressive battles, which is the central theme of this anime. In just over 2 hours we follow their lives over a period of about 4 years in a not quite straight line. Characters appear and disappear in a single scene never to be seen or heard of again. The entire time you’re watching it feels like you’re missing something. Like you’ve missed the first episode
Bottom line: The central theme of this anime is the many impressive battles fought throughout their journey, leading up to the tournament. If you like fighting animes you’ll enjoy Shadow skill.
Other available series: 26 ep. TV series released in 1998, 5 part manga series
